A man is being made to pay for his criminal deed after he stormed a market to make away with a bag of rice.
For allegedly stealing a bag of rice valued at N13,000, Tijani Dada, a 23-year-old unemployed man, was on Wednesday brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court.
Vanguard reports that the accused, whose address is unknown, faced a one-count charge of stealing.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Uko, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 18, at the Agbalata market in Badagry, Lagos State.
He said the rice belonged to the complainant, Mrs Morenikeji Ajala.
“The accused came to the complainant’s shop when the she was not around and just took a bag of rice, but he was caught before he could get away," he said.
Uko noted the offence was punishable under Section 285 of the Criminal code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. Counsel to the accused, Mr Folabi Smith, pleaded with the court to grant bail to his client on liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mr Abiodun Etti, however, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50, 000 and a surety, who must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned to July 27, for further hearing.
